Mat-Su College Honoring All Who Served
Contributed by Nick McDermott
One in ten Alaskans are Veterans. On November 11, 2024, Mat-Su College (MSC) would like to invite the public to join us in honoring all of those who have served.
MSC began having an annual Veterans Day event in 2011. Through the years, the ceremony has grown from a modest gathering around the school flagpole to a sit-down gathering in the Glenn Massay Theater.
This year, our guest speaker will be Shane Holt with Battle Dawgs - an outdoor rehabilitation program designed for our nation’s combat veterans.
There will also be a special presentation In Memoriam of Gene Horner. He was State Director of Bugles Across America for 17 years for Bugles Across America, a nationwide roster of horn players who fill Taps requests for veteran’s funerals. He was also an important part of our past ceremonies.
Senior Master Sergeant (Ret.) Tom Spangler serves the campus community as a valued academic advisor and he says, “Most families in the state call veterans their neighbors and friends. Our ceremony serves to bring the community together each year to celebrate the numerous veterans in the Mat-Su Valley and to honor those service members who have given their lives in service to our country.”
In the week leading up to the ceremony, a Memorial Wall will be set up on campus.
Date: November 11, 2024

Matanuska-Susitna College (MSC) is an extended college of the University of Alaska Anchorage (UAA).
The University of Alaska Anchorage has been accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities (NWCCU) since 1974. MSC was changed from its previous designation as a community college by University System restructuring in 1987. Now serving nearly 2,000 students per semester, MSC was known originally as Palmer Community College, and provided its first course offerings to residents of the Matanuska and Susitna Valleys in 1958. In 1963, when the Borough government was formed, the name of the College was changed to correspond to the boundaries of the Matanuska-Susitna Borough. The main campus is located on a 950-acre site on Trunk Road, about halfway between Palmer and Wasilla.
