As termination dust creeps down the slopes, the excitement, or maybe dread, of winter begins to ring across Alaska. Whether you hate the idea of snow or can’t wait until there is enough on the ground to ride, ski, board or mush in, September is the month to start getting prepared.
Visit the Alaska Avalanche Information Center at the 10th Annual Emergency Preparedness Expo, Saturday, September 29th, from 10am to 3pm. AAIC instructors will be on hand with live demonstrations, hands-on training activities, education opportunities and more. It’s all free, and great for ages 8-years and up. Whether you’re a veteran backcountry traveler or new to Alaska, this experience is sure to get you on the path to preparedness.
Emergencies and disasters can strike at any time, whether you’re in your house or in the backcountry of Alaska. Don’t wait until you’re forced to react. Make sure you and your family have a plan, plus the supplies and response skills needed to make any misadventure an inconvenience and not a tragedy. Take steps to ensure you are ready.
AAIC will be at the Emergency Preparedness Expo thanks to support from the Alaska Department of
Public Safety - Division Alaska State Troopers, the Mat-Su Health Foundation, Matanuska Valley Federal Credit Union and more than 50 like-minded agencies, organizations and companies. Learn more at www.2018matsuemergencyexpo.eventbrite.com.
There will also be a poster contest for kids, ages 5 to 18. Draw a picture to show what emergency preparedness means to you. First 100 entries earn a free ice cream cone from McDonalds. The top poster in five age divisions will also receive a 3-day emergency family “grab and go bag”, a certificate of community service and a special award presentation with the Matanuska-Susitna Borough Mayor and Assembly. The poster contest is made possible with support from the Mat-Su Health Foundation and McDonalds.
