Flotation Devices Saving Lives in Alaska

Contributed by Joe McCullough, Alaska Boating Law Administrator

This past July, two children were playing in an inflatable raft near the shore on the Little Susitna River when they were swept into the current. Two adults nearby were able to jump into action and rescue the boys with a throw able flotation device from a Kids Don't Float life jacket loaner board, sponsored by the Susitna Rotary.

Recently, the Alaska Office of Boating Safety presented a Boating Safety Merit Award to the Susitna Rotary Club to show our gratitude for their partnership. Their commitment to the safety of their community has saved lives! Please join us in thanking them and all the life jacket loaner board sponsors across our state.

Special thanks to Dan Phillips for receiving the award on behalf of the club and to Jack Timm for letting us know about the lifesaving use of the throw able device and helping to coordinate the presentation of this award.
