It might surprise you to learn that cats can and do, in fact, get bored, particularly if they are primarily indoor cats. Once you determine that your cat is bored, there are many enrichment activities that can prevent your cat from taking part in undesirable, destructive behavior. Some very simple changes to your home and routines can alleviate problems stemming from boredom.
There are many signs that can indicate a kitty is bored:
• Over-grooming: Excessive licking or chewing of her skin might mean your kitty is finding life a bit dull. Check with your veterinarian to make sure that these behaviors do not stem from physical ailments.
• Chasing other animals in the household: Sometimes this aggressive behavior can mean that kitty needs more stimulation.
• Moping or lack of interest in things that used to be enjoyable to her.
• Inactivity: Cats sleep a lot, but not seeing any physical activity can be worrisome.
• Naughty behavior: Destroying furniture or constantly knocks items over
• Overeating and obesity: Just like humans!
Kitties have certain requirements that make them feel content with their lives. The environment is an easily-manipulated aspect of a cat’s life. A cat needs space that allows for resting and refuge. Cats love to be in high places, so providing cat trees or walkways close to the ceiling are great additions to a cat’s world. Placing these in the vicinity of windows offers double the fun. Scratching posts, vertical and horizontal, are favorites of kitties. Placing these in various areas of your home are a sure bet for a happy cat.
Interactive toys are lots of fun for kitties. These could be feather wands, balls, laser pointers and strings with pompoms attached. Toys that mimic the animals that are regarded as prey are a big hit with cats. So, you can’t go wrong with toy birds, insects or rodents. Give your cat a chance to stalk, chase, pounce and bite these toys. There are many different types of “puzzle” toys that have balls that kitty can hit/roll without them getting lost. Remember to rotate toys, so they do not become monotonous to your kitty.
Cats are not as aloof as their reputation would imply. Most cats enjoy social interactions, including petting, brushing and sitting in your lap. Spend quality time with your cat on a daily basis. She will let you know when she has had enough! Oftentimes, getting another dog or cat as a companion can be a positive experience as well.
Get a bird feeder and hang it near a window that is accessible to your cat. A fish tank can also provide your cat with hours of stimulation.
Training your cat is a great way to strengthen the bond you share. Cats can be trained to perform tricks or to wear a harness and go explore the outdoors. Building an outdoor fenced area that will keep kitty safe, but allow her to enjoy the sights and sounds of the world outside is a fabulous gift to give your kitty.
Cats are no longer viewed as the cold-hearted, standoffish creatures of the past. Kitties love their humans and are excited to interact with us and the world around them. We need only to nurture this in them.
