Ask anyone who REALLY, I mean REALLY likes to dance and they will tell you, “It is in my blood!”, or some similar response. When I was a kid, growing up in North Carolina, the local department store had three-way mirrors in the clothing section. When my mom went there shopping, and took me along, she would leave me in front of one of these tall three-way mirror alcoves, and I would dance and sing and entertain myself, until she was through shopping.

My introduction to “formal dance” began when I was 5 years old when I asked my mother if I could take piano lessons and she said, “Perhaps you would rather take dance lessons.” I ended up taking both for the next six years. By then, I was helping teach the little younger dancers, and at age twelve, I was designing costumes for the recitals.

As I grew older, I continued taking dance lessons of various forms, such as modern dance in college, belly dancing when I was in California working on my masters degree, ballroom dancing, etc. and now, as a retired senior living in Wasilla, my favorite dancing is done in Zumba class and on the dance floor with my husband, who is my dance partner for life!

My three younger sisters also taught dance at one time or another. Two of them owned their own studio for many years, and one of my sisters is the owner of a regional dance competition, called White Lightning, which is well known in the South.

When I was visiting one of my sister’s online websites, I saw the most precious photo of her smaller students standing at the dance bar. This photo inspired me to want to paint, “The Tiny Dancers”.  After acquiring permission from the photographer, who was one of the little girl’s moms, I set out to paint a body of work that I am delighted to share with you, the public, and hope that you will attend the artist’s reception on July 11th, from 4:00pm - 6:00pm at Espresso Café, in the strip mall across from Walmart.

If you have “dance in your blood” you won’t want to miss seeing the Tiny Dancers Show, which will be up from July 1st through July 27th. Most of the artwork is for sale.
