PRESS RELEASE from Mat-Su College
In the fall of 2018, Mat-Su College will offer 25% reduced tuition for selected occupational endorsement program courses. These courses provide occupational training in skilled/technical fields to fill critical positions throughout the Mat-Su Valley. Eligible programs are designed to get students working, including CISCO Certified Network Associate, Refrigeration and Heating Technology, Office Systems Technology and Veterinary Assisting.
Introducing the lower tuition initiative, UA President Jim Johnsen stated, “In providing a tuition reduction on courses in many high-demand workforce areas, I’m confident more students will have the opportunity to build the skills needed for their advancement in our future workforce. These skill-based programs also are ideal for employers looking to affordably develop employees’ skills or for individuals looking to change careers or increase their credentials.”
The reduced tuition initiative is part of UA’s strategy to increase enrollment and degree-completion, while ensuring Alaska’s workforce needs are met. A recent study by Georgetown University Center on Education and the Workforce found that 66% of jobs in Alaska will require education and training beyond high school by 2025. Mat-Su College is training future workers for some of the most in-demand fields, such as office management, logistics, and medical office coding.
Mat-Su College is committed to filling the workforce needs of the community by offering reduced tuition for occupational endorsement program courses. Reducing course costs will help Alaskans who want to learn new skills, refresh or complete a workforce training program.
The tuition reduction will be applied on a course-by-course basis. For a lower-division course, the 25% reduced tuition equals $159 per credit ($212 - $53 = $159). There is no reduction to assessed fees, non-resident surcharge or other costs.
