Spherical Twilight

Contributed by David Jenkins

A glass sphere,
nestled in the crook
of a frost-covered tree.
A visual souvenir
of the dim twilight,
bringing the vivid horizon into focus.

I can’t help but linger and stare –
it beckons to me.
Shades of fire fuse into shades of ice.
The sky is a canvas
in which various hues
from sapphire to vermilion
have been spilled.

Yet this appears so perfect, so serene;
An organized chaos.
A masterpiece.
Much more than spilled paint
or smeared pastels.

Through crystalline glass,
Frigid, brittle branches hang…
resting until the warm embrace of spring
wakes them from their winter slumber.

As the sun sinks further
below the skyline,
The last rays of sunlight
give way to the city’s incandescence.
Bright orbs of cars and buildings
now illumine the darkened scene.

A glass sphere,
nestled in the crook
of a frost-covered tree…
I remove it from its temporary perch
And saunter away through the snow.
I think to myself, and there’s one guarantee –
the splendor of this scene
will remain a fond memory.
