The Palmer Historical Society is pleased to present Stephen Brown, PhD, at our History Night 2018 Kick-Off! Dr. Brown is the District Agriculture and Natural Resources Cooperative Extension Service Agent for the Mat-Su/Copper River District, UAF.

Dr. Brown will be discussing his work with the Global Positioning System (GPS) and the Geographic Information System (GIS), as it relates challenges of the north. He will also be discussing his groundbreaking work with NASA and the 2003 Challenger Disaster.

Dr. Brown holds a PhD in environmental science from the University of New York, as well as an MS in environmental science from the University of Texas, San Antonio. He also has a BS from Texas A&M University in recreation and parks management, as well as an AS in physical science from Vernon Regional Junior College.

In 2003, the Federal Emergency Management Administration (FEMA) asked Dr. Brown to assemble a team of experts from UTSA to lead the forensic geospatial analysis and recovery of the challenger accident of the Hemphill, Texas section of the debris field. This disaster was the first time that the GPS and GIS were used to respond to such a large scale disaster.

In his spare time, Dr. Brown is an avid mountaineer and marathon runner. We might get a glimpse into some of his latest climbs!

Refreshments, door prizes and a time of Q&A are a fun part of each of our History Nights. Enter our special door prize drawing for a replica set of Matanuska Colony Bingles.
